Hypnosis is the act of guiding someone into a trance state. Trance states are defined in different ways, but they commonly refer to a deep state of relaxation and/or hyperfocus with increased suggestibility.

We’re typically immersed in a trance state in our daily lives. If you’ve ever zoned out while driving our found yourself in a lull while binging on your favorite Netflix show, you’ve been in a trance state. Hypnosis is also known for its ability to harness the power of suggestion, meaning that a person will be inclined to accept what is being suggested during the trance state.

What’s the difference between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?

While the term hypnosis is the act of guiding someone into a trance state, hypnotherapy refers to the use of hypnosis to affect a positive effect on an individual. It’s a complementary approach that can be used along other forms of medical or psychological modalities to treat anxiety, phobias, relationship issues, and addictions including tobacco, alcohol, and other dependencies that are not substance-related (such as gaming, gambling, shopping, and sex). Hypnotherapy has also been known to help improve sleep, memory, learning disorders, and pain management, among other concerns.

How does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy is a form of psychotherapy, in the sense that it is a tool that facilitates self-awareness and inner growth. However, not all hypnotherapists have the same approach. For example, clinical hypnosis usually refers to a provider that uses the trance state to increase suggestibility and implant affirmations (ie. suggestions) that will “reprogram” a person’s mindset. So theoretically, you might be instructed to drink water every time that you reach for a cigarette.

What is a hypnotherapy session like?

Although there are many different techniques, most hypnotherapists work in calm, peaceful environments. You can expect a safe space in which you can have a conversation with your hypnotherapist, and then you’ll be guided into a relaxed, focused state. During this time, you will be asked to think about experiences or situations related to the topic or concern that you’ve brought to the session. Unlike some dramatic movie portrayals, you will be conscious at every moment during the session, retaining full control of yourself and your body.

What is Soulful Hypnotherapy?

As a shamanic practitioner, my approach to hypnotherapy is spiritual. I believe that all emotional pain begins in the spirit, and that all of the answers to your questions lie within yourself. My role is to guide you towards a fuller awareness of your life experience so that you may find new ways of understanding how you can help yourself.

Is hypnotherapy only for addictions and physical pain?

Hypnotherapy is a wonderful modality for pain management and substance abuse, and it is also great for anyone who is curious about their own spiritual growth or is interested in increasing their intuition. People who have disturbing dreams or have been struggling with grief may also find great relief from just one hypnotherapy session.

How many sessions will I need?

The amount of sessions needed will depend on the client and their own levels of commitment. While most clients find the relief and self-awareness that they need in just one session, others might gain deeper insight and healing with up to 4-5 sessions. Every session opens up a possibility for further exploration!
